History About T.P.U.

Historical Background

Tokyo Polytechnic University was established in 1923, and has a history and traditions spanning 100-year history. Rokuemon Sugiura VI, founder of Konishi Honten (present-day Konica Minolta, Inc.), strongly advocated that a school specializing in photographic education must be built in order to disperse into society the human resources that would contribute to the advancement of photographic technique in Japan and be of service to our national development. As successor of this ideal and will, Rokuemon Sugiura VII founded the Konishi Professional School of Photography (in present-day Honcho, Shibuya Ward, Tokyo) and began offering a high-level education specialized in photography. This was to be the antecedent of Tokyo Polytechnic University.
